In fact, some of the tops games on Steam are free to play, here is a graph created by Steam to show you game stats and more.

You won’t have to spend a penny to fully experience theses video games, but you can purchase micro-transaction to support the developers and to enhance your gaming experience. You won’t have to worry these are not “pay to win” games. So, here goes the list of 5 Best free to play games on steam.
Top 5 free to play games on Steam
1- Path of Exile
To start our list, one of my favorite games on Steam, I played since the beta so I have a couple of hundred hours into the game. Path of Exile is an action RPG, hack & slash game. I have said it and will say it again, PoE is what Diablo 3 should have been. The Story of Path of Exile is pretty straight forward. You are an Exile, struggling to survive on the continent of Wraeclast, as you fight to gain experience that will allow you to exact your revenge against those who wronged you.
Players can initially choose from six available classes to play as (Duelist, Marauder, Ranger, Shadow, Templar, and Witch), plus you can unlock the Scion class near the end of Act 3. What makes this game unique is the ability customization, each class can pretty much use any abilities you just need the right gem socket in your equipment. Another significant aspect of the game is the skill tree, it’s one of the biggest skill tree I have ever seen, and I’ve been playing RPGs for over 20 years now. I’d recommend going on the PoE forums and looking up a build for your class, as it can be confusing for a new player.
2- Dota 2
The most popular game on Steam according to Steam Stats. Dota 2 is a competitive game of action and strategy, played both professionally and casually by millions of people around the world. If you’re a fan of League of Legends, then this game is a must. The goal in Dota 2 is to destroy the main enemy structure while fighting computer-controlled units and other players, all that using unique abilities & mechanics from different Champions. You can pick from a pool of over 100 different heroes, which is great.
To fully experience this game I’d recommend playing with friends, don’t get me wrong playing solo is very fun as well. This game is about strategy and communication so try to get four of your friends to play the game, as it’s a five vs. five matchups. Believe me communicating and making amazing plays to win the game will make you appreciate this game even more. The learning curve is a little bit rough, but it will get easier as you put more hours into the game.
3- Team Fortress 2
An oldie but a goodie, Team Fortress 2 is a classic in the world of FPS games. Even after ten years, this game is still in the top 10 most played games on Steam. Ten years and still very popular, this game should be good right? In fact, this game is awesome, it is a first-person shooter game, where the player can pick between nine distinct classes, which are all unique. Giving the player a beautiful diversity when picking a class.
TF2 offers a variety of game modes including capture the flag, king of the hill and much more. What makes this game so good is the gameplay, the humor, and the constant updates, yes the developers are still updating this game after ten years. The updates consist of new weapons, new maps, new in-game items, more content and much more. The one thing that stands out the most about this game is the modding. You can add mods to the game to enhance your gameplay.
Warframe is a free-to-play cooperative third-person shooter video game developed by Digital Extremes. Warframe is a first person shooter MMO game that takes place in a sci-fi world. The players in Warframe controls of the Tenno, a race of ancient warriors who have awoken from centuries of cryosleep to find themselves at war with the Grineer. The player can engage a lot of PvE content from missions and quests, or they can go through PvP if you’re a fan of players vs. players.
The players are equipped with three weapons, a big primary weapon, a small second weapon and last but not least a melee weapon. Like many other MMO games, all equipment can be upgraded with “mods” that drop from enemies or are given as mission rewards. Players rest and travel in their own small, customizable ship in-between missions. Like I mentioned above, get some friends to play with you as the game tends to be more fun with friends. The only bad point in this game is the grind is very long, you will need a lot of patience, but hey it’s a free to play game.
5- War Thunder
War Thunder is a World War II-inspired, cross-platform vehicular combat MMO developed by Gaijin Entertainment. Players in War Thunder can take part in amazing battles on land, in the air, and at sea, fighting with real players from all over the world in a continuously developing environment. Players have access to an enormous amount of combat vehicles, over 500 to be exact, from detailed aircraft, tanks, and other combat vehicles, which offers a lot of versatility.
Engage in intense PvP matches with a realistic damage system for aircraft and ground vehicles, which increases even further the player’s experience. You can also play PvE with your friends, including historical and dynamic campaigns, solo missions, a mission editor and much more. What I find surprising about this game is the cross-platform playability, you don’t see that in every game. All of that without spending a penny, sure you can support the developers, but that’s all up to you.
This concludes our list of Top 5 free to play games on Steam. As you have seen above these “free to play” games are comparable to full priced games. As they offer fantastic gameplay, great storyline, awesome PvP & PvE and many many hours of gameplay. All of them are completely free to play. You will not have to spend a dime to fully experience these gems. If you want to support these developers which I highly recommend, then you can buy in-game microtransaction, which will help the devs
If you want to support these developers which I highly recommend then you can buy in-game micro-transaction, which will help the devs and will make your gaming experience a little better. By that I mean, character skins, weapon model, more inventory space and much more. In no case, it is necessary to put money in the game to play it.
